(Former President Jack Magruder presenting Doris and Walker Allen with the 2001 President's Leadership Award)
The Walker and Doris Allen Fellowships for Faculty Excellence at Truman State University recognize outstanding faculty members who have greatly contributed to the success of the University and its students. These fellowships are available thanks to a generous gift from Walker and Doris Allen of Columbia, Missouri. Walker W. Allen graduated from Truman State University (then Northeast Missouri State Teacher's College) in 1939 with a BSE degree in Business Education. He was employed by Fisher Governor Company where his duties included auditor, controller, secretary and treasurer. Walker also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1963. He retired in 1983 from the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, MO as associate director of fiscal affairs. Doris Allen attended Truman from 1938-1939. Walker served as a Truman State University Foundation Board member from January 1998 until his death in March 2009. The Allens have two children, William D. and Pinney Lee. Doris continues to reside in Columbia.

The Allens established the Walker and Doris Allen Fellowships for Faculty Excellence with one of the largest gifts ever made to the Truman State University Foundation. The purpose of the fellowships is to recognize the central role of faculty in achieving the liberal arts and sciences mission of the University. Up to three outstanding faculty may be recognized with the $10,000 fellowship awards each year. The selection criteria and process were developed in cooperation with Walker and Doris Allen.

The Walker and Doris Allen Fellowships for Faculty Excellence are open to all tenured or tenure-track faculty who have completed four years of full-time service at Truman State University. Selection of the recipients will be based on evidence of outstanding performance in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and institutional service. Documented achievement in the areas of teaching and mentoring students will be most strongly considered. Teaching is broadly defined to include work with students in a range of activities and settings (e.g., teaching activities in the classroom, laboratory, studio or on the stage; advising and mentoring students individually or through student organizations; guiding research/scholarship; involvement with the New Student Programs; and facilitating off-campus/outreach student activities). Consistent with Truman's mission, the selection committee will consider how nominees support the liberal arts mission and utilize assessment data in their activities. The committee, at its discretion, may collect additional information regarding a nominee's professional contributions from the nominee or other sources. Faculty may receive the Fellowship only once.

Nominees will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the President and this committee will submit its recommendations to the Provost, who will communicate these recommendations to the President. The committee will consist of a majority of faculty members (the Provost will provide the President with a list of faculty candidates for the committee), an administrator, a person knowledgeable of student affairs, and will include a student representative.
